Complete Fight Card and Press release for Thanksgiving Massacre!

AFO has a lot going on these days. Between promoting top quality MMA shows every other month at the Holiday Inn, Mansfield, MA, producing “Proving Ground”, a New England-wide televised show aired every Saturday morning at 11, featuring the best fights from AFO shows as well as interviews and, of course, the AFO round card girls, and now raising money to feed families on Thanksgiving through the Greater Boston Food Bank, which is becoming an annual event for AFO.
“At Thanksgiving Massacre 2009, we raised money to feed 100 families which was about 650 people Thanksgiving day. This year, we’re hoping to double that,” said AFO President Pete DiLorenzo.
Every AFO show has had a benefactor, from the American Cancer Society, Dana Farber Cancer Center, to various children’s charities, local sport teams, etc.
“We are grateful for the success we’ve had, and want to be able to give back to the community.”
Thanksgiving Massacre 2010 features some of New England’s brightest stars, both pro and amateur.
Headlining the show will be AFO’s 155 pound champ Joey Proctor defending his title against top contender Luis Felix of Team Rockstar. The undefeated Proctor will face the most difficult challenge of his young career in Felix, an experienced, tough veteran with a great wrestling background and of over a dozen fights.
The co-feature will be the anticipated matchup between up-and-coming Brian Marino of Allaire Fitness and the highly respected veteran Dan Bonnell. Mention MMA in New England, and one of the first names that comes to mind is Bonnell who not only maintains a busy career as a fighter, but runs a gym, works as matchmaker for GFL, and writes some extraordinary interesting and in-depth articles on the sport for MassMMA.net. Marino, overall 9-1, has rebounded from his decision loss to Jeff Moore with two impressive victories and will again step up his competition. Unfortunately for Marino fans, which have followed his 2-year career with AFO, he will be out of circulation for the next few years. Brian will head to boot camp to serve in the US Army after the first of the New Year. Everyone at AFO wishes Brian the best of luck.
Lewis Corapi of Sityodtong will make his professional debut at 155 pounds. The exciting fighter, also a full-time college student, has had 2 previous appearances with AFO, and is expected to make some waves as a pro. Corapi had been slated to fight Mike Cronin, but Cronin has opted to give up his professional license prior to his debut and fight as an amateur instead. Stepping in will be Connecticut’s Matt Kaponis, who was slated for a rematch with Joe Reverdes who was forced out of the fight with an injury.
A very interesting bout at 145 pounds will pit Franklin Isabel, currently representing Waikru against Cape Cod Fighting Alliance’s Fernando Perez. Both fighters have come off some tough losses recently, and are looking to rebound and continue to build their careers.
135 pound crowd favorite Theo Desjardin will face PA’s Doug Sonier. Neither fighter brings a stellar record to the table, but both bring exciting styles and never-quit attitudes, as well as a tremendous amount of respect for each other. This is a fight that will show good matching makes good fights.

On the amateur side of the show, several top schools will be represented including (in alphabetical order)  Allaire Fitness, Boneyard, Cape Cod Fighting Alliance, Dexter MMA, Doomsday, Knucke Up MMA, North Shore Martial Arts, Red Line MMA, Rhode Island Combat Club, Rockstar, Team Pradel-Serey, USA Karete, and Waikru.
As always, the amateur side looks exciting and well matched. Fights to pay attention to include 200 pounders Patrick “The Beast from the East” Walsh vs Matt “The Beast from the North” Andrikut; 170 pound rising star Ricardo Georges facing another undefeated fighter in Rich Zhang of Sityodtong. 205 pounder Patrick Euglow of Allaire will face Joe Castriotta of Doomsday, while Doomsday teammates Jim Armato and Joe Cloutier step in, respectively, with Waikru’s Sean Nichols and Redline’s Elias Ikiki.
Tom Evans of USA Karate will make his mma debut against V. Phinney of North Shore Martial Arts. Phinney fought one of the standout bouts on Halloween Havok, losing a narrow decision.
Boneyard’s Graeme Prue will challenge Waikru’s Ethan Connelly with the winner facing hot prospect Kin Moy in January.
Cape Cod Fighting Alliance will have a few amateurs joining pro teammate Fernando Perez, pitting Rick Joy against Nate Andrews, while Jay Filipino faces Tim Song.
Dexter MMA’s tough Jeff Lyons faces 1-0 Matt Durling of Keene, NH while Joe Powers steps in with Rockstar’s Keenan Raymond.
Last but not least, 185’s Tom Ventiquence of USA Karate and RI Combat’s Joe Lancia will meet, and heavyweights Anthony Soto faces Erik Grendon in the mma debut of both fighters.
Every ticket bought for this great event will feed one person an holiday dinner!! This is a show we’d like to see the entire MMA community get behind to support.  Also at the event we’ll be collecting caned goods to be.

Gonzales stripped of 135 title!

AFO announced today that after repeatedly turning down offers to defend his title, 135 pound champ Pedro Gonzales was officially stripped of the title for refusal to defend and breach of contract.
“Pedro had a signed agreement with us that as long as he held our title, he would fight exclusively for AFO. When an opportunity came up for him to fight for another organization, we were happy to make an exception and allow it as long as it was good for his Pedro. We have done everything we could to help develop his career.”

After turning down a chance to fight come-backing Ken Stone on AFO’s October 8 Halloween Havoc show, Pete DiLorenzo began to loose faith in his champion.

“Ken Stone hadn’t fought in 16 months, we thought this would be an amazing opportunity for Pedro. The WEC was watching Ken’s fight, basically contract in hand. If Pedro beat him, his career would take a huge leap forward. Instead, he opted to take a little fight which did nothing for him on a show in New Hampshire, which we had every right to put a stop to, but gave him the chance to do what he wanted, as long as he defended his title on the November Thanksgiving Eve show.”

Unfortunately, Gonzales turned that one down as well. Offered #1 ranked Paul Gorman, Gonzales declined, only to have it come to light that a competing promoter offered both fighters the same fight in Maine early in 2011 for more money. Gorman, who had agreed to the fight and negotiated terms, having a contract in hand, contacted AFO and said if they’d re-negotiate and beat the other offer, he’d fight in Massachusetts instead. AFO declined, after already meeting Gorman’s requests once, this is poor business and AFO does not work in this manner.

Meanwhile, Gonzales, stated a specific financial demand to fight Stone. AFO contacted Gonzales’ manager/trainer Steve Pento on September 30 to offer him a defense against Stone on January 8. AFO offered exactly what payment Gonzales demanded for Gorman and Stone. Pento said he was pleased with the offer, but Gonzales, who only seems comfortable facing guys he is a 10:1 favorite over, again turned it down, saying he was “unhappy” with the offer.

At that point, AFO felt they had no choice but to strip Gonzales of the title.

“We think Pedro is a very, very talented guy,” said DiLorenzo. “If we didn’t we would have never given him the title fight in the first place. We had a lot of hope for Pedro, to develop his career, and we think we have done what’s best, or should I say attempted to do what’s best, for Pedro all along. Pedro is a work in progress. He demands crazy money, but yet does not sell a single ticket. With Pedro, we couldn’t count on him bringing fans on his own. We had to develop him and introduce him to our audience, basically market him and turn him into a star. Unfortunately, he made no effort to help. When he won both his fights for us, he was extremely disrespectful of his opponents, and is sullen and uncommunicative in interviews. He needed to be re-invented and we were willing to invest the time, but Pedro refused to look at the big picture and take these amazing opportunities we offered him.”

AFO plans to continue to seek out the top two 135 pound fighters available to fill the vacant title early next year.  We have always had the real best in that division fighting for us and will contuine to do so moving forward.  We have no need for fighters that duck the real top guys.  The 170 and 155 pound titles will both be at stake on November 24, with 170 pound champ Paddy Thompson defending his title against Steve “Sandman” Dunn, while Joey Proctor faces the skilled veteran Luis Felix at 155.

January will feature the vacant AFO Heavyweight Championship being contested between Shawn Galano and Mike Dexter.

Sept 16th, 2010

October 8 may be a few weeks before Halloween, but the AFO Pro-Am card at the Mansfield Holiday Inn is so loaded on talent, it’s scary!

With the return of pound-for-pound ruler Ken Stone out of ATT, with a WEC contract in reach against the very dangerous Jason Bennett from the Lions Den and the immensely popular Paddy “Thunder Kitten” Thompson attempting to regain his title from the super-talented Tim “The Hitman” O’Connell.  These two fights will headline Havoc!!

But is that the only Halloween treats AFO has to offer? How about New England MMA’s biggest draw, The Sandman, Steve Dunn, in his first fight for AFO against Team Extreme’s John Downey, who’s been calling Dunn out for a year!! The winner here will face the winner of Thompson, O’Connell November 24th at Thanksgiving Massacre 4.

Brian Marino, will be continuing the comeback trail after his first loss early in the year when he faces off against the always-game Christian Rivera, while teammate Theo Desjardin faces Maine’s Chris Rowley in a battle of 0-1 135 pounders, someone’s O has got to go.   185 pound pros Josh Mellen and Josh Aransky will square off in an interesting contrast of styles, Mellen’s outstanding standup vs Aransky’s strength and ground-and-pound will make for a very interesting Match up, both fighters coming off of big wins with Aransky beating Mellon’s team mate Robbie Roberts in the AFO.

Some highlights on the program is the rematch of South Shore Sportfighting’s Sloppy Joe Lamoreaux, trying to avenge his only loss to The Pound’s Mike Zatek, who brings an unique style into the cage, as well as an equally unique personality.  Joe has been calling out Mike for 6 months now and Mike has finally agreed to the match.  This time both fighters promise to NOT leave it in the hands of the jugdges.

Two undefeated 135 pounders square off when South Shore’s Dave Lachapelle pitts his 3-0 record against Rhode Island Combat’s Devin Pilkington, 2-0. The 6’ tall Pilkington fights effectively on the inside for such a tall guy, and is stepping up his competition after an impressive win over Theo Desjardin last February and Fred Mandreakier in June.

Team Pradel-Serey’s impressive Ricardo George, 2-1, who pulled out a last-minute win after being outwrestled over most of his last outing against Tal Stimson will again be in tough against 2-0 Joe Polazio at 175 pounds. George’s never-say-quit mentality and well-rounded game will be tested against the very strong Polazio, out of Allaire Fitness.

6’5” Tyler King, 1-0, will face the determined and strong Brandon Newman in a heavyweight battle.   This is Brandon’s first fight and promises to end it in star fashion.

What looks like fight of the night will pit 145 pounders Jeff Lyons, 2-3 of Team Dexter against Luke Raphael MMA’s Jose Rusterian, 2-2. Both have fought for AFO and are some of the most exciting fighters you will see.

Many other schools will be represented including the well-known and highly respected Wai Kru, represented by David Salin, facing North Shore Martial Art’s Vyachaslav Phinney, and Sean Nichols facing Dexter’s Joe Powers.

Allaire Fitness, working hard to become a real player in the New England MMA circuit, will have Patrick Euglow, coming down to 190 pounds after his amateur debut as heavyweight, facing Darby McLaughlin of Springfield.

Dragonfire MMA of Maine will make it’s AFO debut with pro Cris Rowley as well as amateurs Tony Collins and Mike Morin.

Peter Roger’s will again be coaching brothers Tal and Thane Stimson, facing Morin and Steve Casali’s Kevin Knight.

Keith Allen MMA will feature Dinis Paiva and KC Faldasz facing South Shore Sportfighting’s Mike O’Connell.

Speaking of South Shore, congrats to coach Scott Lockhart who became a father earlier this summer. Now balancing parenthood with coaching, Scott and head trainer Bill Mahoney continue to produce some of the top fighters in New England and Nationally.
